Upper Mustang Trek
Upper Mustang Trek is an ancient Himalayan Kingdom trekking which lies in the northern central part of Nepal and at the top of the Kaligandaki River. It is an arid and starkly beautiful area of Nepal. This region was opened to trekkers in 1991 and since the time it has remained a restricted area with only a small number of special permits issued each year. Upper Mustang consists of two distinct regions: the southern part and the northern where the languages, culture and traditions are alike to those of the Tibetan people. Keeping the cost of the permit high, and the amount of time spent in the area restricted is an attempt by the Nepalese Government to protect the local Tibetan traditions from outside influence as well as to protect the fragile environment.
