Nepal was better known in the outside after the successful ascent of Mt Everest by Tenzing Norgey Sherpa and Sir, Edmund Hillary expressed his view that the porters played very important role for the success of their expedition during Mt .Everest Golden Jubilee celebration on 2003.
In 1956 Col. Jimmy Robert started commercial Trekking industry. Since that time mountain tourism has never looked back until today. (In these days the industry is at risk due to the problem in our country and in the other countries as well). The porters have always played a major role for the growth and continuation of mountain tourism simply by carrying the load. Camping trekking with the large no of porters has become the brand name of the Nepal’s trekking. The role of the porters is always important in Nepal’s mountain tourism.
What we do to our porters
- We treat our porter kindly and fairly
- We send our porters to the some N.G.O’S and I.N.G.O’s who provide them language training. Provide them clothing and other trekking related training. We want to make them a guide.
- We check porter’s health conditions on daily basis at high altitude. If some body is sick we send them down
- We provide them enough funds to get back down and for their treatment.
- We saw many porters working in the Trekking Company carried huge loads of luggage we only allow them to carry max 25-30 Kg of loads in the trekking. And 15 to 20 kg in a high passes and expedition.
- We do a yearly insurance package for our porters when they are in trekking area.
Our Suggestion to the N.G.O’S, I.N.G.O’S and trekking company
- Construction of porter’s shelter.
- Find ideal and project that can help porters and implement them.
- find scheme that can help porter directly
- Give more training to porters about altitude sickness, different language and other trekking related subject.
- Porter clothing bank has been established.
- Porter education/ training workshop/ seminars have been conducted.
- Video film has been made about porters.
- Porters association has been formed.
- Trekking company must have provided insurance package, shelter, food and clothing. For their porter and even they have to provide helicopter rescue.
Our suggestion to the porters
- Carry the load honestly.
- Help trekkers and staff.
- Do not show pseudo poverty with foreigner.
- Honest is the best policy
- Do not force yourself to carry the load if you are very sick
- Report your guide immediately if you are not feeling well.
Conclusion
Porters are hard working people. They are also human being like us. We have to learn to love porters. Porters play very important role for Nepal’s mountain. Doing a pottering is the need of them. They have to earn money for their needy family and gives future for their child. If we can provide them bit better pay. Reasonable weight and respectful environment and we can improve these poor people greatly.
If we are able to improve the situation of the porter better, this is very important for our national economy as well.
