TAAN develops alternate trekking route for Upper Mustang
Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) will develop an alternate trekking route for Upper Manang trekkers.In 2011, Upper Manang received around 100,000 trekkers and became most sought after trekking destination. “We are trying to develop a trekking route that will be separate from the route that is being used for general transportation,” according to president of the association Mahendra Singh Thapa. Dirty snow melting mountains faster
Every morning Gian Pietro Verza walks up the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier to take measurements as the wind makes colourful prayer flags flutter noisily. That same wind carries soot particles that is melting the mountains faster. The Italian scientist and mountaineer has been working at the Pyramid International Observatory below Mt Everest since 1987, and has seen the rapid retreat of the glaciers around him even in the last 25 years. �The ice used to come right up to there,� he says, pointing towards the jumble of boulders and gravel in the Khumbu glacier, �now it has retreated up beyond base camp.� Agostino Da Polenza and the late professor Ardito Desio set up the Nepal Climate Observatory Pyramid (EvK2Cnr) in a unique collaboration between the Italian Research National Council and the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology, at an altitude of 5,050 m in Lobuje. The EvK2Cnr has been researching the effect of global warming on the Himalaya, and recently turned its attention to the impact of �black carbon� on accelerating the melting of ice and snow. Black carbon is essentially fine soot and ash produced by diesel exhausts, thermal powerplants, brick kiln smokestacks and forest fires, and should not be confused with gaseous carbon dioxide.... 3 new carriers to fly on Ktm-Malaysia route
Three new carriers have unveiled plans to operate on Kathmandu-Kuala Lumpur route. Malaysia-based budget carrier AirAsia is starting scheduled flights on the route by the end of this month, while Malaysian national carrier Malaysia Airlines plans to launch flights on the route from September 1. Kingfisher halts flights to Kathmandu
Kingfisher, a troubled Indian airlines company, has cut off its operation to Nepal days ahead of its planned closure of flights. According to the website of Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), an international aviation consultancy body, the company has planned to withdraw its operations from Kathmandu, Bangkok, Dhaka and London effective from March 25, 2012. RAK Airways, a national Airline of United Arab Emirates (UAE) formally announced start of its flights operation between Kathmandu and Ras al-Khaimah, the UAE from February 15 on Wednesday.
