Tiger Hill:
Situated at an altitude of 2590 meters (8482 ft.) and 13 kms from the town is the highest point in the area. This spot has earned international fame for the magnificent view of the sunrise over "Kanchenjunga" and the great Eastern Himalayan Mountains . Even Mount Everest , the world's highest peak, is visible from here.
Dhoom Gompa, Darjeeling :
About 8 kms from Darjeeling is the Dhoom Gompa. Here a very beautiful statue of the Maitrayie Buddha is established. The Monastery has also preserved some of the rare handwritten Buddhist manuscripts
Batasla Loop:
About 5 kms from Darjeeling , this Railway Loop is a marvellous feat of engineering. It is fascinating to watch the toy train wind its way round the loop. The War Memorial constructed in the memory of brave sons of Darjeeling who died in different action since 1947, is worth a visit. A glorious view of snowy peak and town can be seen from this place.
Natural History Museum:
This museum has a collection of over 4300 specimen. Established in 1903, this natural history museum packs in its folds a rich collection of fauna found in the Himalayas and in Bengal . Among the attractions are included the estuarine crocodiles. This unique museum also has a good collection of butterflies. The mineral forms of various stones are displayed in a very attractive manner in the museum.
Senchal Lake :
A favorite Picnic Spot about 10 km. from the town. The lake provides drinking water supply to the Darjeeling town.
Kanchenjunga View:
from Darjeeling one can have the best, uninterrupted view of the world’s third highest peak. Bhan Bhakta Sarani provides one of the enthralling views of these snow capped peaks. The Chowrasta also gives you a good sight to the Kanchenjunga peak.
Darjeeling Zoological Gardens:
The zoo is situated two km form the main town. This zoological garden of Darjeeling houses some of the rare species of animals and birds. This is the only zoo in India having the Siberian Tigers. Apart from these the rare Red Panda is also there. The Snow Leopards, Great Grey Birds, Snow Yaks are some the animals which are attracting tourist in great numbers.
Observatory Hill:
The oldest site in Darjeeling is Observatory Hill, provides one of the breath taking views kof Kanchenjunga peak. This place is also very sacred for the Hindus and the Buddhists as there are temples and the monasteries at this place.
Bhutai Busty Gompa :
with the back drop of the Kanchenjunga range stands a monastery called the Bhutia Busty Gompa. This monastery was shifted from the observatory hills to the present place. The Gompa is a branch of the Nyingmapa sect's Phodang Monastery in Sikkim . The monastery is not far from the chowrasta and is very tastefully decorated. It also has a library which has a copy of the Tibetan Book of the Dead.
Lloyds Botanical Garden :
It contains a representative collection of Himalayan plants, flowers, orchids etc. This place is near the taxi stand. The green houses are well worth a visit.
Tibetan Refuge Camp:
Tibetan Refuge Camp was established in 1959 a center for the refuges, which had fled Tibet with the Dalai Lama after the Chinese invasion.
The area in and around Darjeeling is a treasure chest of interesting destinations. The Tibetan Refugee self-help scheme produces traditional artifacts, jewellery and carpets for tourist consumption.
Himalayan Mountaineering Institute:
A spot not to be missed is the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute created by the late Tenzing Norgay, the Sherpa who conquered Mt Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary on 29 May 1953. A display of equipment used on the climb is one of the highlights. A zoological garden nearby has an assortment of wildlife such as yaks, Siberian tigers and red pandas who call the region their home.
Darjeeling Rangeet Valley Passenger Ropeway:
At North Point about 3 km from the town. The first passenger ropeway in India . Chowrasta :
one of the important shopping places in Darjeeling . Here the Nehru Road and the Mall Road Intersect each other. The snow capped peaks of Kanchenjunga are visible from this place. Near Chowrasta are several Hindu and Buddhists temples. This place is over flowing with foreign tourists. You can also enjoy a pony ride form this place.
Kalimpong:
This is a small hill station between Siliguri and Gangtok. It is a small but bustling town in the Himalaya foothills of West Bengal Kalimpong is 1250 m above sea level and offers excellent views of the Mt Kanchenjunga and the other Himalayan peaks. The popular view points are Durpin Dara and Deoro Hill. The swift flowing Teesta River runs by the side of the road adding to the beauty of the scenery.
Kureseong:
Situated at an altitude of 2458 Mts.(4864 ft), 51 kms from Siliguri and 30 kms from Darjeeling, Kurseong's natural advantages make it a very attractive tourist destination.Located at a lower elevation for those who dislike the severe winters of Darjeeling, Kurseong enjoys a milder and a very healthy climate throughout the year.
Mirik:
Mirik is being developed as a hill resort. It is 55 kms from Siliguri. The town is centered around the Sumendu Lake . Landscaped gardens, the tourism department cottages and boating facilities have made Mirik an attractive resort town. Mirik is 1767 m above sea level.
